Rossville AME Zion Church
Staten Island, NY
Rossville AME Zion Church is one of the remaining structures of the oldest continuously inhabited free Black settlement in the United States—Sandy Ground. In 1828, the first Black residents of Staten Island purchased land in what became Sandy Ground. Families who arrived from Snow Hill, Maryland, increased the population in the 1840s and 1850s. The building is a wood-framed structure on a masonry foundation clad with faux masonry that replaced the original wood clapboard siding.
.
Built by Tottenville builder-developer Andrew Abrams in 1897, Rossville AME Zion Church is a New York City Landmark (LP-2416, designated February 1, 2011) and within the National Register-listed Sandy Ground Historic Archeological District (NR# 82003398; 1982).
